Cotehardie II

Fertig! Zumindest mit dem Unterkleid. Die Freundin, die ich besucht habe, hat auch genäht, aber da sie Anfängerin ist und ich ihr viel erklärt und gezeigt habe (und sie einfach noch langsamer näht als ich) ist sie nicht ganz so weit gekommen. Hoffentlich hat sie bald Zeit, mich zu besuchen, dann können wir an ihrem Kleid weitermachen, und ich kann währenddessen an meinem Oberkleid arbeiten.

Done! At least the underdress. The friend I was visiting also did some sewing, but since she's a beginner and I showed and explained a lot (and, as a beginner, she just sews a lot slower than I do) she didn't get quite as far as I did. Hopefully she'll find the time to visit me soon so we can continue with her dress, and I can work on my overdress in the mean time.

Der bestellte Stoff. Das helle Grün und das Blau links sind von mir, die anderen beiden von meiner Freundin.. Der Stoff ist relativ schwer und (wie ich inzwischen leider feststellen musste) etwas kratzig, aber das beste, was ich mir zu meinem Budget leisten konnte.

The fabric we ordered. The light green and the blue one are for me, the other two for my friend. The fabric is pretty heavy-weight and (as I realized much to my chagrin) a bit scratchy, but that was the best I could do for my budget.

Mein Kleid schließt mit einer Schnürung auf der linken Seite, auf dem Bild sieht man das Nahtband, das ich zur Verstärkung der Ösen eingenäht habe. Die Ösen habe ich später von Hand genäht. Ich war mit dem Schnitt der Ärmel nicht zufrieden und habe deshalb nochmal ein neues Schnittmuster erstellt, diesmal mit Stoff und Stecknadeln direkt an meinem Arm.  Es ist immer noch nicht perfekt (wahrscheinlich auch, weil das Armloch auf einem modernen Schnitt basiert), aber ich wollte endlich weiter machen, und ich habe zumindest sehr viel mehr Bewegungsfreiheit als in meiner rostroten Cotehardie.

Man sieht an dem Schnittmuster auch, wo ich die Knöpfe annähen wollte, bis ich gelesen habe, dass diese an die Kante genäht werden. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

My dress closes with lacing on the left side, in the picture you can see the twill tape I put in to reinforce the eyelets. I made the eyelets by hand later on. I wasn't happy with the sleeves, so I made another pattern, this time I draped it right on my arm. It's still not perfect (probably also because the armhole is based on a modern pattern) but I wanted to get on with it and at the very least I have a lot more freedom of movement than in my rust-coloured Cotehardie.

You can see from the pattern where I meant to put the buttons until I read that they are suppposed to be fixed right to the edge. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An den Ärmeln saß ich wahrscheinlich vom gesamten Kostüm am längsten, da eigentlich fast alles (Knopfleiste verstärken, Knopflöcher nähen, Knöpfe herstellen, Knöpfe annähen) von Hand gemacht werden musste. Dafür finde ich, dass sei verdammt cool aussehen, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass sie das einzige sind, was man noch vom Unterkleid sieht, wenn ich das Oberkleid auch trage.

Leider habe ich keine besseren Fotos als das obere vom fertigen Kleid, aber spätestens wenn meine Freundin zum weiternähen kommt, sollte ich das beheben können. Bis dahin hier noch ein Foto von meiner DnD-Miniatur, die ich auf meinem Wochenendbesuch bemalen durfte (mit den Farben des Freundes meiner Freundin):

I think the sleeves were the part of the costume that took me the longest, since pretty much everything (reinforcing the buttonholes, sewing the buttonholes, making the buttons, attaching the buttons) had to be done by hand. I think they look pretty damn cool, though, especially considering that they will be the only part of the underdress still visible once I am wearing the overdress.

I'm afraid I don't have any better pictures of the finished dress than the one at the top of this post, but I should be able to rectify that once my friend comes by to continue sewing at the latest. Until then here's a picture of my DnD-Miniature that I was allowed to paint (using my friend's boyfriend's dyes) during my weekend visit:

Cotehardie

Falls ich das noch nicht erwähnt habe, ich gehe ganz gerne auf Mittelaltermärkte. Am liebsten mit Kostüm. Die Freundin, die oben auf dem Foto links neben mir steht, kommt auch sehr gerne mit, muss sich aber bisher immer ein Kleid von mir leihen (in diesem Fall das GGK, das sonst ja auch nicht mehr getragen werden würde ;) ). Also sind wir auf die Idee gekommen, dass ich ihr anhand eines Mittelalterkleides mal eben das Nähen beibringe.

Wie ihr an dem Bild oben sehen könnt, habe ich schon vor ein paar Jahren eine Cotehardie genäht, damals nach einem Schnittmuster aus dem Buch "Patterns for Theatrical Costumes", die aber nie richtig gepasst hat und, nachdem ich in letzter Zeit zugenommen habe, jetzt noch weniger. Da ich das Gefühl habe, in den letzten 3-4 Jahren einige Fortschritte in meinen Fähigkeiten gemacht zu haben, war das der perfekte Zeitpunkt, auch für mich ein neues Kleid zu nähen, in meinem Fall etwas historischer orientiert.  

In case I haven't mentioned it so far, I quite like going to medieval fairs, preferably in costume. The friend standing next to me in the picture likes to come as well, but so far always had to borrow one of my dresses (in this case the GGK, which probably wouldn't be worn anymore otherwise ;) ). So we got the idea to have me teach her how to sew while making a medieval/fantasy dress.

As you can see from the picture above, I already made a cotehardie some years ago from a pattern in "Patterns for Theatrical Costumes", but it never really fit right, especially not since I gained some weight recently. Since I also feel that I made some big steps in my sewing skills in the last 3-4 years, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to make a new dress for me as well, albeit a bit more historically oriented.

Als ich diese Skizze gemacht habe, dachte ich noch, dass ich das rostrote Kleid weiterverwende und nur ein Oberkleid nähe, aber nachdem ich relativ billigen Leinenstoff online gefunden habe (9€ pro Meter) und festgestellt habe, wie wenig mir das alte Kleid noch passt, ist der neue Plan, das Unterkleid in pistaziengrün zu nähen, das Oberkleid bleibt blau.

When I made that sketch I still thought I'd keep using the rust-coloured dress and simply make an overdress, but after I found some relatively cheap linen fabric online (9€ per metre) and realized just how badly the old dress fits the new plan is to make the underdress in pistacio-green and the overdress in royal-blue.

Damit das Kleid diesmal besser passt, habe ich versucht, das Schnittmuster an meinem Körper zu erstellen, was ohne Hilfe ziemlich schwierig war. Nachdem knapp 2m Ikea-Stoff für Mock-ups draufgegangen sind, habe ich jetzt aber ein Schnittmuster (inklusive Ärmel!) mit dem ich einigermaßen zufrieden bin.

Because I wanted the dress to fit better this time around, I tried drafting the pattern on my body this time, which was kind of a pain without any help. But after using up about 2m of Ikea-fabric for mock-ups I now have a pattern (including sleeves) with which I am reasonably happy.

So weit, so gut. Dieses Wochenende besuche ich meine Freundin und dann gibt es hoffentlich ein paar neue Fotos. Bis dahin noch ein Foto von dem Moebius-Schal, den ich gerade auf den Stricknadeln habe:

Spaß mit Hemden

Ich weiß nicht genau, was es über mich aussagt, dass inzwischen alle aussortierten Klamotten meiner Familie erst über mich gehen, bevor sie in die Altkleidersammlung kommen, aber so bin ich vor einer Weile an einen Haufen alte Hemden meines Vaters gekommen. Da mein Vater relativ groß ist, sollte mir das in der Theorie relativ viel Stoff pro Hemd geben, da in Praxis ich auch relativ groß bin, stimmt das leider nur bedingt. 

Auf jeden Fall hatte ich heute Lust auf ein kleines, einfaches Nähprojekt, und habe aus einem alten Hemd einen Rock geschneidert.

I'm not really sure what it says about me that by now, all my family's discarded clothes go through me before being donated, but that's how I came by a bunch of my father's old shirts a while ago. Since my dad's kinda tall, there should technically be a lot of fabric per shirt, but since I'm kinda tall also, that's not that true.

In any case I felt like doing a simple small sewing project today and made a skirt out of one of the old shirts.

Zwei Nähte links und rechts, um die Armlöcher zu begradigen, eine Naht für den Gummizug + ein Knopfloch und dann war der Nähmaschinenteil schon wieder fertig. Den Knopf habe ich per Hand angenäht. Ich hatte keinen Faden, der farblich zum Stoff gepasst hätte, also hab ich einen mit etwas Kontrast genommen. Wenn schon, denn schon ;)

Two seams left and right to straighten out the armholes, one seam for the elastic waistband and a buttonhole and that was it for the sewing machine. I attached the button by hand. I didn't have any thread in a matching color, so I used one with a little contrast. I think it's fun :)

Ich bin mir noch nicht ganz sicher, ob ich mit der Passform glücklich bin, also mal schauen, ob ich den Rock auch anziehe. Spaß gemacht hat das Nähen auf alle Fälle.

Außerdem trage ich schon länger die Idee für ein neues (Fasnets-)Kostüm mit mir herum, und hab es heute mal aufgezeichnet. Da es Stickerei beinhaltet, dürfte es etwas aufwändiger sein, aber bis zur nächsten Fasnet ist ja noch ordentlich Zeit. Ich dachte mir nur, dass es ziemlich lustig (und passend!) wäre, als tapferes Schneiderlein rumzulaufen ;)

I'm not sure if I'm happy with the fit, so we'll see if I actually wear it. Sewing it was fun, in any case.

Additionally, I've been carrying around this idea for a new (carnival-)costume for a while, and ended up sketching it today. Since it incorporates quite a bit of embroidery, it'll probably be a bit more work, but there's still a lot of time to the next carnival season. I just thought it might be fun (and fitting!) to walk around as the little brave tailor ;)

Westworld Costume Part 2: Skirt and Bodice

Wie gesagt dachte ich mir, dass der Fantail-Skirt eine gute Basis für ein Westworld-Kostüm abgeben würde, also habe ich am zweiten Januarwochenende Stoff und Verzierungen gekauft. Ich war tatsächlich mehrere Stunden in dem (nicht sonderlich großen) Stoffgeschäft und habe verschiedene Stoffe und Verzierungen mit den Sceengrabs der Serie auf meinem Handy verglichen. Nichtsdestotrotz habe ich mich für einen etwas dunkleren Blauton als das Hellblau von Dolores entschieden, weil es an mir einfach besser aussieht.

As I said, I thought the Fantail-Skirt might make a good basis for a Westworld-Costume, so the second weekend in January I went ahead and bought some fabric and trims. I think I actually spent several hours at the (not very big) fabric store, cellphone in hand, comparing fabrics and trims to several screengrabs of the show I had on my phone. Even so, I ended up going for a darker, more turquoise shade of blue for my fabric instead of the light blue Dolores wears, because it better suits my complexion. 

Das war das erste Referenzbild, das ich irgendwann letzes Jahr auf mein Handy gespeichert hatte. Man sieht die Form des Oberteils und dass es mit Knöpfen schließt. Man sieht auch die Struktur des Gewebes, was allerdings mit meinem Budget nicht nachzumachen war, also habe ich einen einfachen Baumwollstoff genommen.

That was my first reference picture I saved to my phone sometime last year. You can see the length and shape of the bodice and that it is closed with functional buttons. You can also see the texture of the fabric, which I found impossible to recreate on my budget, so simple cotton it was.

Nachdem ich den Stoff gekauft hatte, habe ich als erstes den Rock genäht. Genau wie beim letzen mal war das Zusammennähen kein Problem, positiv überrascht hat mich, dass bei diesem Stoff (etwas weicher als der graue) der Rock auch ohne Unterrock schön fällt.

After buying the fabric I started with the skirt. Like the first time, construction posed no problem, and I was positively surprised that with this fabric (a bit softer than the grey one) the skirt drapes nicely even without a petticoat.

In diesem Bild sieht man, dass Dolores zumindest ein kleines Gesäßpolster trägt, also war das der nächste Schritt. Ich habe leider kein Foto, aber das Polster ist Halbkreisförmig und wird mit einem Gurt um die Taille geschnürt. Man braucht wirklich sehr viel weniger Füllung als erwartet, ich habe mehrmals Füllung wieder aus dem Kissen genommen bevor ich es zugenäht habe, und glaube trotzdem, dass es etwas zu extrem geworden ist.

This picture shows that Dolores wears at least a little bustle pad, so making one was the next step. I'm afraid I didn't take any pictures, but the pad is shaped like a semi-circle and is strapped around the waist. You really need a lot less batting than I expected, I took out batting several times before closing the pad, and still think it ended up a bit extreme.

Meine Schneiderpuppe mit Kissen und Unterrock. Das erstellen des Schnittmusters für das Oberteil erwies sich als komplizierter als gedacht, da ich es mit Draping auf der Puppe versucht habe, und der Unterschied zwischen ihrer und meiner Form (mein Oberkörper ist ein paar Zentimeter länger als ihrer) durch die betonte Taille noch verstärkt wurde.

Making a pattern for the bodice proved more complicated than I had thought, since I tried draping it on the dressform and the difference between her and my form (my upper body is some centimeters longer than hers) was exaggerated by the emphasis on the waist.

Nach mehreren missglückten Versuchen habe ich schließlich beschlossen, mein Standard-Oberteil-Schnittmuster als Grundlage zu nehmen und zu versuchen, die Nahtlinien und Abnäher des Kostüms damit nachzubilden.

After several failed attempts I finally decided to use my standard bodice pattern as a basis and to try and recreate the seamlines and darts of the costume with it.

Hier sieht man die beiden Front-Abnäher und den tiefen Ausschnitt. Hinten befindet sich je links und rechts ein Abnäher, im nächsten Schritt habe ich noch die Schöße des Oberteils an das Schnittmuster angefügt.

Here you can see the two front-darts and the low neckline. In the back there's one dart on either side, for the next step I added the tails to the pattern.

Danach habe ich die Knopfleiste genäht und den unteren Saum versäubert.

Afterwards I sewed the button-closure and finished the lower hem.

Die Ärmel habe ich aus diesen beiden Youtube-Tutorials erstellt, sie bestehen aus zwei Teilen. Der Ausschnitt und die Ärmelenden wurden mit cremeweißer Zackenlitze, blauem Samtband und blauem, in Falten gelegtem Schrägband verziert.

I drafted the sleeves following these two Youtube-tutorials, they're in two parts. The neckline and the sleeve ends were trimmed with off-white rick rack, blue velvet ribbon and blue, folded bias tape.

Den Gürtel hatte ich zum Glück im Schrank, in der Serie trägt Dolores außerdem noch eine kleine Gürteltasche. Da ich mal wieder keine Taschen in den Rock genäht hatte (und damit es passender aussieht), habe ich mir auch eine bestellt. 

Luckily I already owned an appropriate belt, in the show Dolores is also wearing a little beltpouch. Since I neglected to include pockets in the skirt again (and to make it look more appropriate), I ordered one.

In den Bildern trage ich unter dem Kleid noch das Korsett, das Gesäßpolster (Tournüre?) und den Unterrock. Ich war den ganzen Tag unterwegs und auf den Beinen, und erst gegen Abend (nach über 10h im Kostüm) habe ich leichte Rückenschmerzen unter dem Korsett bekommen. Alles in allem ein sehr gelungenes Kostüm, ich habe viele Komplimente bekommen, auch wenn bei uns im Dorf natürlich niemand erkannt hat, was (bzw. wen) ich darstellen sollte. "Western" haben aber alle erkannt ;)

In these pictures I'm wearing the corset, the bustle pad and the petticoat underneath the dress. I wore it the entire day while walking around and dancing, and only in the evening (after more than 10h in costume) I got some minor backache underneath the corset. All in all a very successful costume, I got a lot of compliments, even though nobody in my village knew who I was dressed as (naturally). The "Western"-aspect everybody recognized, though ;)

  

Westworld Costume Part 1 - Corset

Ich habe tatsächlich ein Westworld-Kostüm genäht. Weil der Eintrag sonst viel zu lang werden würde, werde ich die Zusammenfassung in zwei Teile aufteilen. Viel Spaß!

I actually did end up making a Westworld-Costume. Because the post would end up way too long otherwise, I'm gonna split the write-up in two parts. Enjoy!

Ich habe mit dem Unterbrust-Korsett angefangen, erstens weil es in einer Szene der Serie gezeigt wird (d.h. man weiß, dass sie tatsächlich eines trägt), und zweitens dachte ich mir, dass es besser wäre, das Gewicht der Röcke mit etwas Unterstützung zu unterlegen (keine Ahnung, ob das ohne Korsett tatsächlich ein Problem dargestellt hätte, hatte ich nur irgendwo gelesen). Die Form war für mich eher sekundär, allerdings weiß ich auch hier nicht, wie das Ganze ohne Korsett ausgesehen hätte, weil ich es von Anfang an in den Schnittmuster-Herstellungs-Prozess miteinbezogen habe.

Das Schnittmuster für das Korsett ist mithilfe meiner Maße ziemlich improvisiert. Ich wollte Kabelbinder als Stäbe verwenden, also konnte ich nur gerade Kanäle unterstützen, und habe das Muster basierend auf den zwei Bänder-Korsetts in Jill Salens Corsets: Historic Patterns and Techniques mit einem schmalen, geraden Seitenteil, und Vorder- und Rückenteil mit sehr gekrümmten Seitennähten gezeichnet. 

Das Korsett besteht aus zwei Lagen Ikea-Baumwollstoff, der noch von meinem Unterrock übrig war, ist an der Seite und hinten mit Stäben verstärkt und vorne mit der Schließe. Für die Schnürung habe ich weiße Schnürsenkel verwendet, weil diese erfahrungsgemäß gute Dienste tun.

I started off my recreation with an underbust corset, firstly because it shows up in one scene (so you know what she's wearing) and secondly because I thought it would be better to have some support with the weight of the skirts (no idea if that would have been a problem without a corset, though, just something I read). Shaping was secondary in my mind, although again I have no idea what it would have looked like without the corset, since I incorporated it into the drafting/draping process from the beginning.

The corset pattern is very much improvised from my measurements. I wanted to be able to use zip ties for boning, so I could only bone on straight seams, so based on the overall shape of the two ribbon-corsets in Jill Salen's Corsets: Historic Patterns and Techniques, I drafted a pattern with a narrow, straight side piece and front- and back pieces that were very curved in the side seam.

The corset consists of two layers of the Ikea-cotton I had left over from my petticoat, is boned in the side and back and has a simple split busk closure in the front. I used white shoelaces for lacing, because I have found that those work very well. 

Die Stabenden sind mit Flossing fixiert, und die Ränder mit hellblauem Satin-Schrägband versäubert. Alles in allem, für einen Erstversuch (und ohne Probierstück *hust*), passt es sehr gut und ist bequem genug, es auch über einen längeren Zeitraum zu tragen.

I tried my hand at flossing and bound the edges in light blue satin ribbon. All in all, for a first try (and now mock-up, *cough*), it fits pretty well and is comfortable enough to wear even for a longer time.

Ich finde, das Foto vom Rücken zeigt die Form der Taille im Korsett am besten, während das andere Bild sehr schön das fertige Korsett zeigt.

I feel like the progress photo of the back shows off the waist shaping best, whereas the other picture shows off the finished corset very well.

Darf's mal wieder historisch sein?

Dieses Projekt liegt zwar schon etwas länger zurück, aber was soll's. Kurz vor meinem Geburtstag im April kündigte die Dreamstress für Scroop-Patterns einen Sale an. Da ich schon etwas länger um den Fantail-Skirt herumschlich, nahm ich das als ein Zeichen und bestellte die Vollversion (Jahrhundertwende + 1940er), es soll sich ja auch lohnen.

This project goes a bit further back, but whatever. Shortly before my birthday in April, the Dreamstress announced a sale for Scroop-Patterns. Since I'd had my eye on the Fantail-Skirt for a while even before that, I took it as a sign and ordered the full version (turn of the century + 1940's), to make it worth my while.

Ich habe tatsächlich ein sehr spezifisches Kostüm mit diesem Rock geplant, deshalb habe ich mir die graue Baumwolle gleich im reduzierten 6m Paket von buttinette.de bestellt. 

Ich bin etwas größer als die Durchschnittsfrau, und wollte auf alle Fälle einen bodenlangen Rock (kürzen kann man immer), deshalb habe ich die Schnittmusterstücke gleich um 10cm verlängert.

I'm actually planning a very specific costume to go with this skirt, which is why I ordered the grey cotton as a discounted 6m-bundle from buttinette.de.

I'm a bit taller than the average woman, but wanted very much for the skirt to be floor-length (you can always shorten it later), so I lengthened the pattern-pieces by 10cm right away.

Die Anleitung war gut geschrieben, und das Zusammennähen verlief fast problemlos. Aus irgendeinem Grund war am Ende die Taillenlinie des Rockes 3cm länger als der Bund, was ich durch zwei winzige Falten neben den beiden Front-Nähten behoben habe. Das fällt nicht negativ auf, hat mich aber auf die Idee gebracht, dass ich da Taschen gut hätte verstecken können - und Taschen sind immer praktisch. Naja, vielleicht später noch.

The instructions were very clear, and assembly went off almost without a hitch. For some reason, the waistline of the skirt ended up being 3cm longer than the waistband, but I fixed that with two tiny pleats right next to the two front seams. It doesn't negatively impact the look of the thing, but gave me the idea that those pleats would have been perfect to hide pockets - and pockets are always good to have. Ah well, maybe I'll add some later on.

Der fertige Rock war leider etwas schlaff und traurig, und überhaupt nicht so toll, wie ich ihn mir vorgestellt hatte. Zum Glück habe ich aber oft genug gelesen, dass die Basis bei historischen Kostümen 3/4 des looks ausmacht, und ließ mich davon nicht entmutigen. Am nächsten Tag bin ich zum Ikea gefahren, habe 4 oder 5m weißen Baumwollstoff geholt, und mit dem selben Schnittmuster einen Unterrock genäht. Der Unterrock ist hinten gerafft statt gefaltet, um mehr Volumen zu geben (und weil das einfacher war), und verfügt über eine 7m lange, 35cm breite geraffte Rüsche. Die Rüsche ist mit Maschine versäumt (weil das bei geraden Stoffbahnen am einfachsten ist), und mit Häkelspitze aus dem Ein-Euro-Shop verziert. Die runden Rocksäume sowohl des grauen- als auch des Unterrocks sind von Hand mit Hexenstich gesäumt.

Unfortunately, the finished skirt was a bit limp and sad and not at all as awesome as I had imagined it. Luckily, I've read often enough that in historical costumes, the foundations make or break the look, and wasn't discouraged. The next day I went to Ikea and got 4 or 5m of white cotton and made a petticoat from the same pattern. The petticoat is gathered instead of pleated in the back, to give more volume (and because it's easier to do), and has a 7m long, 35cm deep ruffle. The ruffle is hemmed by machine (because that's easiest to do with long, straight pieces of fabric) and trimmed with crochet-lace from the dollar-store. The rounded hems of both the grey skirt and the petticoat are hemmed by hand with herringbone-stitch. 

Das sieht doch schon viel besser aus, oder?

Das Unterhemd besteht übrigens aus einer gehäkelten Passe und einem Baumwoll-"Schlauch", der durch Biesen vorne und hinten ein wenig in Form gebracht wird, und ist komplett handgemacht.

The chemise, by the way, consists of a crochet yoke and a cotton "tube" that is shaped with pintucks in the front and back, and is completely handmade. 

Die Röcke sehen toll aus, und es macht Spaß, mit so viel Stoff um die Beine herum zu laufen. Für das geplante Kostüm fehlt jetzt noch ein Korsett und ein Oberteil, wenn ich das habe, werde ich auch verraten, was das ganze werden soll. Außerdem habe ich mir überlegt, dass der Rock in hellblau mit entsprechendem Oberteil (+ Hemd und Korsett) auch ein sehr tolles Westworld-Kostüm abgeben würde. Muss ich für die Fasnet auf alle Fälle im Kopf behalten.

The skirts (in combination) look fantastic, and it's a lot of fun to walk around with that much fabric swinging around my legs. For the planned costume I still need a corset and a bodice, once I've got that, I'll tell you what it's supposed to be. I also thought that the skirt, in a light blue and with the appropriate bodice (+ the chemise and corset) would make a good Westworld-costume. I have to keep that in mind for the upcoming carnival.
